self-pity - excessive, self-absorbed unhappiness over one's own troubles. It's a feeling you get about yourself and your problems, especially when this is unnecessary or greatly exaggerated.
This emotion is so ugly that no one in his or her right mind wants to admit feeling it. Even when sober, many of us remain clever at hiding from ourselves the fact that we are astew in a mess of self-pity.
We do not like at all being told that it shows, and we are sharp at arguing that we are experiencing some other emotion—not that loathsome poor-me-ism. Or we can, in a second, find many other perfectly legitimate reasons for feeling somewhat sorry for ourselves.
The most insidious problem with drugs is that the human body develops a tolerance for them and requires larger and larger doses to achieve the same effect.
The same is true with self-pity.
The more you allow yourself to indulge in it, the more you will require. Soon, self-pity will become a habit, one so debilitating that you will rob yourself of all the potential you possess.
Happily, there is a cure.
If you truly analyze the situation, most often you will find that the problems that have driven you to pity yourself are...mostly of your own creation.
It follows, then, that the best person to remedy the problem is the person who created it: you, yourself.
